Have you ever noticed that some brand names will stick with a product and that is what they become called generally? For example items like drain-o or Brillo Pad are referred by those names instead of drain cleaner, or steel wool pad when you go to look for one of these products to purchase because those names were used by the first Manufactures of those products.
This same scenario applies to the pricing of used cars.My husband and his friend have been involved in restoring classic cars for many years. They work on the cars in the evenings and on weekends. They each have kept a couple of the old used cars that they have restored to good working order and are now fixing a few that they will sell for a profit. They were discussing how much they were hoping to get out of the car and they said they would compare the blue book value to similar vehicles being sold at auctions and come up with a median price.
I remember them discussing in causal conversation about this listing I just really never thought much as to were they were they were going to get the blue book values. My wife asked me if I could grab the blue book off of the desk I have in my office and I went to my library thinking my son may be keeping it there. There are a lot of books in my library so I thought it would be there but I did not see any blue books any where. My wife decided to find out what was taking me so long. She walked right up and took a tan looking book out of my library case. I started laughing and said that I was feeling quite foolish. I was looking for a book that was the color blue. I did not look at the title of the tan book.
When the price of used cars were first published in an effort to establish uniformity in cost one company published the pricing they were published in a blue colored book and were referred to as the blue book value. Other pricing books came out that were not as extensive and accurate so the blue book value became the measure that car salesmen used to determine pricing.
Nowadays there are multiple publications for car pricing that are very accurate but they are all referred to as a blue book value for a used car. The details included inside the blue book are determined by the number miles, the manufactured year, any special options, and what kind of condition the vehicle is in. There is still some leeway in determining a price, but the parameters are set.
