Internet Gaming Safety Tips
When venturing onto Internet poker Web sites, you should be cognizant of more than just poker tips. It’s a shame, but there are an abundance of people out there who would be more than happy to fleece you while you gamble. Getting ripped-off when gambling online can happen even to seasoned poker players. As an example, the news program 60 Minutes covered a hacking that happened on a famous online poker site. The attack came from an ex-employee who knew the site thoroughly, and a lot of big-time players were ripped-off. That was not the norm, however, because the site’s proprietors had nothing to do with it. In that case, even people who are diligent and cautious wouldn’t have been able to diagnose the problem.
Fortunately, many on-line gaming threats are much more obvious. There are some obvious signs you can watch for that will go a long way to keep you safe. But forewarned is forearmed, so you’d be well-advised to acquaint yourself with the following online gambling safety:
See whether the site stands behind its interactions
See whether the site is an Interactive Gaming Council (IGC) member. IGC members pledge to follow a code of ethics, so there’s at least a fighting chance that they will be upstanding.
Look for professionalism
If the site’s graphics and technology aren’t up-to-snuff and seem unprofessional, go somewhere else. Lack of quality could mean the operators are either cash-poor or crooks. If so, they may go belly-up and take your cash with them.
Make sure the site offers appropriate customer service
Don’t register with a site that doesn’t have 24/7 support with both a toll-free phone number and a support e-mail address. And you might want to contact their customer service team before you register, to see how well they respond.
Test the waters
If the site looks up to snuff, is an IGC member and has verifiable contact information, conduct a few modest transactions as tests before you surrender any significant money.
These steps will show a lot about the workings of the site, so don’t skip them. They may help you dodge a major bullet. Keep in mind that there are a lot of on-line gambling sites, so don’t be afraid to take your gaming dollars elsewhere if a site can’t clear any of these steps.
