131

In the early spring, weather conditions can determine how successful your night fishing for walleye and pickerel can be especially during the spawn and post spawn time of year. During this time of year the walleyes and pickerel can be a multiple locations. They may still sit tight where they spawned, or they may be sitting tight in adjacent waters, or they may be located somewhere in between these two area. You need to do your home work on the weather at the local area you intend to fish and adjust your planning according to the weather report. The weather will play a key part as to what the walleyes and pickerel activity level will be at. There are some simple planning tips you can use before you decide to fish a particular location.

1.You need to find out where the walleye or pickerel are spawning and then pick a good spot if you intend to fish during the spawn?

2.What kind of habitat is located close to the spawning grounds?

3.If the spawning grounds do not offer a good food source how far away have the walleyes and pickerel migrated?

The fish have to be located somewhere between the spawning grounds and the outer reaches of adjacent habitat. Walleye and pickerel will spawn in a variety of areas located in natural lakes such as shallow rocky areas located on the main lake, rocky feeder creeks, and at the windward side of rocky shorelines.

Once you have zeroed in on where the fish are located you can determine how you want to go night fishing for walleye and pickerel at night. it is important to pool all your resources togreather when your night fishing and you can increase your chance of a good catch by attracting bait fish to your boat or shore fishing location by using a submerged fishing light sometimes called a underwater fishing light. The light will attract zooplankton which in turn draws 100’s of bait fish close to you if the conditions are right. You need to pick a spot that already has a viable habitat to support the bait fish. Just rember walleye and pickerel allways need to feed and thats why they stay near habitat with a good food source.

A good old reliable live bait rig that I use is a slip bobber that is adapted with a small battery powered light that is attached at the top so it is easily seen bobbing in the water. You can also use small light sticks that will attach to the tip of your bobber. You can then use bait shop purchased walleye minnows as you bait selection. When you are fishing for walleyes or pickerel in the early spring it is best to fish with walleye minnows and not night crawlers or leaches, these walleye baits are better used in the spring and summer.

I want to thank you for reading my article about submerged fishing light. Have a great day and the the best of luck to youWe wish you the best of luck on your next fishing trip!

Typically walleye or pickerel will spawn where there is a swift current or waves the water temperature is between 40 degrees F to 50 degrees F. The spawning grounds typically need to be rock and rubble bottom. The early walleye and pickerel spawners will start at inlet streams that are rocky, second period spawning fish will find locations along main shore lines and or on shallow reefs.

Take for example in and around Lake Erie early spawning walleye will start there spawn at rocky rubble areas located at different inlet creeks and rivers. One of the most famous walleye runs is on the Maumee river which drains into lake Erie. Then secondly walleye or pickerel will spawn in the many shallow reef locations in the western basin. A prime walleye night fishing spot would be on top of a reef if you want a exciting evening of fishing. If you have a underwater fishing light sometimes called a submerged fishing light you could anchor on the bottom you can sometimes increase your catch of walleye or pickerel at night.

The migration away from the spawning grounds will depend on weather conditions water temperatures and whether there is a good food source in the spawning area the post spawn fish are located. The most important condition that will determine how long the walleye or pickerel stay around after the spawn is the abundance or lack of a food source. Walleyes need to eat and after the spawn they will be aggressive feeders because of the strenuous spawn and the winter period. During the early spring post spawn period fish will move around constantly always looking for a adequate food source. If for example there Is an abundance of walleye minnows concentrated in one area you can bet there will be schooling walleye hanging around for an easy meal. So if you plan on night fishing for walleye a key condition you need to look for in early spring is an abundant walleye food source. Sometimes you can create a temporary food source if you can locate areas that tend to attract zoo plankton. A shallow flat on the windward side will sometimes have these conditions.

Using a underwater fishing light will also attract zooplankton. It is impotantant tlo understand that you wanr to attract zooplankton because it is the primary food source for the bait fish that will begin to swarm around. The bait fish will attract yellow perch and walleyes to the area. The Walleye or pickerels main food source are bait fish but walleye are very adaptable and will feed on perch also.

Night Fishing For Walleye and Pickerel 3 Have you ever wondered what actually attracts walleyes and pickerel to a certain area at night and stay there? Well there are certain characteristics located at certain areas that will attract and hold walleyes and pickerel at night. If you can learn these key characteristics you can become successful at catch walleyes at night. Night walleye fisherman will see different patterns then the daytime walleye angler. To night fisherman there are two types of spots that draw and hold walleye to a certain area.

Number 1 During the spawn you will find walleye and pickerel holding at night only at spots that have proper depth and bottom content.

Number 2 After the Spawn you will catch walleyes and pickerel at night only where there is the proper depth and bottom conditions and where there is a plentiful food source.

When you think about it, Walleyes and pickerel have to eat and they are night feeders by nature. Walleyes and Pickerel have a high metabilism and need to eat, and typically they will feed aggressively during the night. When you take some time to ponder on it, Walleye’s and pickerel will pick similar spots that offer ideal bottom conditions over others. The sole reason In my opinion, is the forage is plentiful in the spot they pick. if walleye have to spawn in areas that offer very little food they will move out of their spawning area as soon as their spawn is complete because they will need to find food. This is not so in spawning areas that hold a good food source for the walleye and pickerel. One ideal spot that is worth looking for is where rock rubble and vegitation merge and walleyes have recently sapwned but are still holding there because of an abundent food source. Chance are they will stay in this location until the water temperature starts to rise or the food source is depleted. When water temperatures start to rise walleyes and pickerel will migrate to deeper water habit during the day but they still head back to shallow water where there is a good food supply to feed at night.

Once you have located your night fishing walleye and pickerel honey whole you will want to anchor off so your walleye rigs are casted near the edge line of vegetation and rock and rubble. This the area the walleyes and pickerel will be feeding at night. If you want to increase your chances of a good night catch of walleye and pickerel use an submerged fishing light also called a underwater fishing light, but make sure you secure it with a weight to the bottom. The light will attract zooplankton and bait fish right near your boat or if you are fishing on the shore close to the shoreline.

A good Live bait walleye and pickerel fishing rig that I use at night is a slip bobber the has a small led powered light attached to the top. I use a walleye hook with a good size split shot to hold your walleye minnow down at your desired depth. The slip bobber is useful because you can adjust your depth quickly until you locate the depth of the night feeding walleye and pickerel.

The Walleye Fishing Secret Weapon

128

Night Fishing For Walleye – Early Spring Night Spots Night fishing for walleye in the early spring can be very productive. Walleyes are very active at night at this time of year in all bodies of water that have walleye and pickerel populations. I would like to offer you some tips on how to catch walleye or pickerel in some very good early night fishing hot spots in the spring.

The old and reliable trolling technique works well at night also. You will need to target areas that are less then 12ft deep at night. One very good area to work is rock rubble areas that are close to vegetation. Look for areas that connect with the shore line and have rock and rubble as well as vegitation these will very good spots to target for your night fishing for walleye trips. Put main lake areas with these conditions down on your priority list after you have exhausted the shore line connected areas.

This time of year is best to catch walleye for you shoreline casters . A good way to attract some fish to you is to use a underwater fishing light which is sometimes called a submerged fishing light. After you locate your casting spot you will need to anchor your underwater fishing light to the bottom. Now move away from the light at least 100ft and start your casting at the edges of the lights beam. You can do this after the underwater fishing light has been submerged for about 20 minutes. The light will attract zooplankton which attracts bait fish to the area. You can fish live baits like large walleye minnows. Do not use night crawlers and leeches this time of year.

The best places to go to catch walleye at night and you are fishing from the shore are areas that are rock and rubble in areas that the walleye typically spawn. Key areas that will hold walleye will be near vegitation and the bottom will be rock and rubble. Walleyes will be feeding on walleye minnows and other natural forage in these areas. You will want to fish on merging points that offer good vegitation and rock and rubble. when you find a good night fishing spot you can set up your night fishing light and you will be ready to go. You should also look for hard bottom current areas which will concentrate walleyes at night during the early spring period. areas that have vegitation and narrow into smaller fisheries that offer hard bottom and current are good places to go shoreline fishing. This could be a hot spot for a night fishing set up using your submerged fishing light source.

Night Fishing For walleye early spring tips Typically there is more activity during midday and around midnight for early spring walleye. If you haven’t tried night fishing for walleye you are missing out on a lot of action. You also will catch fewer fish during the daylight hours. The walleye is a nocturnal fish by nature and feed more aggressively at night. If you look at the walleyes eyes they are designed for low light intensity. They can see extremely well at night. Have you every wondered why you have better luck if you are fishing during the daylight hours on an overcast day?

During this time of your there will more active walleye and pickerel at night then you will find during the day. When your night fishing it does not mater whether you are going to be fishing in muddy stained or clear waters. And if you are fishing clear waters You definitely should fish at night. The darkness removes any of the presentation problems you must deal with during the day especially in clear waters. One good thing about having good night fishing equipment like submerged lighting, or sometimes called underwater fishing lights the lights will draw the fish to you. All you need to do is setup in a likely nightly haughty haunt for these fish and you will be all ready to go. The underwater fishing light is not used to attract the walleye at night what it does is attract zooplankton which intern attracts hundreds of bait fish to your area.

Early spring night fishing for walleye is one of the few time of the year when the walleye are very predictable in will be concentrated their nightly locations. Make you you do some homework on the lake you intend to fish beore you head out on the water at night. Typically night fishing spots for walleye will be in shallower water, like shallow rock and rock ruble areas. These areas are great for shore casting. If you can find an area where rock and rubble meet with vegetation you have found a night fishing for walleye honey hole definitely set up for the night here. You will be hooked once you land a few 5 or 6 pounders which are rare during the day bite. When you night fish for walleye in the early spring you will catch some of the larger females that normally won’t be around during the day. Typically all larger walleyes are very seldom active during the day if you want to catch a trophy walleye try night fishing.
If you are fishing on a clear lake during the late spring, summer or early fall seasonal period and your luck has been pretty dismal during the day, then try fishing for bass at night. Sometimes the big bass will head for cover during the day especially if the lake you are fishing on has a lot of fishing pressure during the day. You probably did not know there is a good possiblility that your local lake becomes very active at night! Those big fish that were hanging tight in cover most likely will come out at night and feed aggressively in 3 to 10 feet of water. The darkness gives them cover and they don’t have to work as hard when they attack their prey. Also there are very few night fishing bass anglers, so the fishing pressure will be limited.

The word night fishing is exciting and very few fisherman take advantage of it. The night brings solitude and any night sounds are amplified over the water. This is the time when a very sensitive rod tip and a good pair of hands will come in handy. Normal sounds of boat traffic, swimmers, skiers, is replaced by the night sounds of birds like hooting owls and of course the sound of feeding fish. If you fish for bass on a clear lake chances are you will catch more and larger bass, if you go night fishing. The best time to start thinking about night fishing for bass is when the water temperature rises into the upper 50 degree mark, but your best night fishing for bass catch will be when the water temperature rises well above 60 degrees.

Any lake that contains a health population of crawfish or spring lizards, (salamanders) is usually a good for catching bass at night. Water dogs (larva salamanders will work well also. If you know where there is any rocky gravelly areas on your lake this is a good spot to set up at night because the bass will feed aggressively in these areas because crawfish tend to move around more at night. To attract crayfish and other crustations and bait fish close to your boat use a submerged fishing light source. The light will also attract zooplankton and other bait fish, which get the bass feeding even more aggressively. Underwater fishing lights are sometimes called submerged fishing lights if you go to purchase one.

Special Report On Crappie Fishing At Night

Fishing pressure can make crappies spooky, and activity seems to preferentially turn off the bigger fish. Of course, you will need to have all your night fishing for crappie equipment ready before it gets dark. Night fishing for crappie often produces more trophy size bass and walleyes and the same is true of crappie. My favorite time of year to be go night fishing for crappie is after the post spawn period and moving into the summer. If want to catch crappie in both size and numbers then you definitely want to learn how to night fish.

Most night fisherman do their crappie fishing near bridges or other lighted structures close to a boat ramp. This technique works but as you would expect you are going to get some fishing pressure here. What I like to do is use a underwater fishing light system which is also referred to as a submersible light source. This works great if you want to set up your own feeding zone away from any fishing pressure. The ideal place I look for to go night fishing for crappie is areas where the bait fish are plentiful. Some spots that I frequent for night fishing area turn in a channel in a tributary creek, or a junction of two creek channels. If a channel swings close to a bank and there are plenty stumps this can be a excellent crappie honey hole when you crappie fish at night. If you want to attract the crappie to tour night fishing location use a submerged light to draw zooplankton and hundreds of bait fish. Also the trophy crappies like to roam the shallows at night. I you want to up your percentages pick a moon lit night for your night fishing trip.

If a cold front is keeping the big crappie scarce then turn to night fishing for crappie. A typical night spot to fish during a cold front head for docks that are close to the crappies spawning areas The big crappie like to hold in this type of structure, and with the added touch of a submerged light you can get them active. Use a lighted bobber with a big crappie minnow out on the edge of your underwater fishing light edges and you will get some good action. Once you get the bait fish attracted the action could get real heavy.

I want to thank you for reading my article about crappie fishing at night. Have a great day and the the best of luck to you on your next fishing trip
